Senna

Also Known As: Senna, Senokot, Senna glycosides, Sennosides

Senna glycosides or sennosides are a number of anthraquinone derivatives useful as a laxative. They are dimeric glycosides named after their abundant occurrence in plants of the genus Senna.

Senna is on the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines.

Historically Senna Alexandrina was used in the form of senna pods, or as a tisane made from the leaves, as a laxative.

Modern medicine has used extracts since at least the 1950s[3] as a laxative.[4][5] If accidentally ingested by infants, it can cause side effects such as severe diaper rash.[6] The active ingredients are several senna glycosides[7] which interact with immune cells in the colon.[8]
